Today the first session for people with disabilities took place at the Federal Palace.

“I could get used to everyday life in the Bundeshaus. We have come here today to set an example – and we will continue,” Islam Alijaj says confidently. The SP politician from Zurich was one of 44 MPs at the first session for people with disabilities. In the fall, he will run for National Council.

The focus of the session was on the integration of people with disabilities in society and politics. Because, as Alex Oberholzer, one of the participants, aptly put it: “Switzerland is still a developing country when it comes to disability policy”. And this must change.

Resolution submitted

The participants in this session passed a resolution entitled: “Full political participation, now!” The resolution was clearly accepted at the end of the session and handed over to the President of the Council of States, Brigitte Häberli-Koller (64) and the President of the National Council, Martin Candinas (42). This in the hope that they will take the concerns to their chambers of parliament.

In concrete terms, the requirements are: no more deprivation of voting and voting rights due to a disability. The participants want more equality and participation in political life, as well as appropriate representation at all political levels – up to the Federal Council.

But not only demands were made. The participants are self-critical and argue for more efforts by people with a disability. They should contribute more.

“I felt like I was being listened to”

According to co-organizer “Pro Infirmis” the session was a success. More than 300 people gathered at the Federal Palace on Friday for the first session for people with disabilities.

“I felt like I was being listened to. All the rural politicians from Valais were here today or personally signed from me,” said a delighted Vanessa Grand. And she’s not alone in that. The attendees visibly enjoyed the event. They liked to present their concerns on the big political scene.
