More and more families urged their guests to find accommodation themselves. The willingness to do volunteer work and donations is declining. “But you can also see the mood changing in small details, for example in the comment columns of articles about Ukrainian women in Switzerland: they say they are preferred,” Peters said in an interview with the “SonntagsZeitung”. “I have the impression that the Swiss are slowly losing their temper.”

Peters has the impression that many Swiss do not realize that the refugees from Ukraine cannot simply return to their homeland. “This week has seen another massive rocket attack on cities across the country. The war won’t be over soon.”

The Swiss authorities have also not actively addressed the crisis and are overwhelmed. “They were always chasing the problems,” says Peters. Federalism furthers this problem: “You get a different answer to the same question everywhere, often the government decides as it sees fit.”

The fact that many refugees from Ukraine cannot find a job is mainly due to language problems – and bureaucracy. “The employment contract must first be approved by the authorities,” says Peters. These hurdles put off many employers. “Starting a career becomes like a lottery.” The state also makes too little use of the resources of voluntary organizations.
