Berset emphasizes the role of women in peace for the UN Security Council

The women, peace and security agenda is not just a UN concept, Berset told the Security Council at UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday. She is reality.

Twenty-three years ago, members of the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. It was the first time that the Council recognized the key role women play in conflict prevention and resolution. And for the first time, security was no longer conceived solely in military terms, but focused on the individual.

This October 2000 resolution was passed thanks to the tireless work of civil society, especially peace activists and the women’s movement, Berset stressed.

The agenda for women, peace and security is universal and its implementation is a daily priority. “Unfortunately, the current crises and conflicts in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen remind us of this,” he said.

Berset was not talking about Iran, where women have been taking to the streets for months risking their lives to demand basic rights from the regime of mullahs in the Islamic “theocracy.”

The UN Security Council, of which Switzerland has been a member since the beginning of this year until the end of 2024, should continue to play its leading role in advancing the women, peace and security agenda, Berset said. But each individual state also has a central role at the national level.

It is encouraging to see that more than 100 countries have adopted a national action plan to implement this agenda. In 2007, Switzerland was one of the first to do so.

“In two years we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of resolution 1325. Then it will be time to take stock,” said Berset.
