National Council wants easier access to teacher training

“The teacher shortage is still there,” says Alex Messerli (37), president of the Lucerne Teachers’ Association.

“The teacher shortage is still there,” says Alex Messerli, 37, a primary school teacher and president of the Lucerne Teachers’ Association. In the canton of Lucerne, at least 10 percent of teachers teach without the relevant qualifications. “It’s a quality issue,” he told Blick TV. Technical skills must be caught up and the didactic area must also be taken care of by the trained teachers. “They should then provide more support, through coaching or mentoring.”

Now Parliament wants to help. Anyone with a baccalaureate in vocational education should be able to study at teacher training colleges without an exam in the future. The National Council demands that. On Thursday, he passed a corresponding motion from his Committee for Science, Education and Culture (WBK-N).

the teacher shortage is not over yet

The Executive Board advocates amending the Universities Funding Act in this direction. It is important to combat the teacher shortage with this measure. In principle, nowadays you need a secondary education diploma to gain access to a teacher training course (PH).

Central National Council member Simon Stadler (34) is very happy with the decision of the National Council. “Hopefully that will motivate many young people to follow teacher training as a second chance education.” After obtaining his vocational diploma, the former mason’s apprentice followed teacher training himself.

But the teacher shortage is not over yet. “The schools are obliged to make attractive offers for teachers,” he says.

Locher and Messerli skeptical

SP alderman Sandra Locher Benguerel (47) opposed this. “Now we have decided to take a careless step,” she says. And teacher Alex Messerli is not satisfied either. “It makes the difference between primary and secondary school teachers bigger. It’s a quality issue.” Teachers with an MBO diploma are an asset. “You just have to overcome the obstacles.”

The teachers’ motion will now go to the Council of States.

New BM alignment?

The National Council has also instructed the Federal Council to examine the need to create a new vocational baccalaureate orientation “pedagogy”. A corresponding postulate of the WBK-N was undisputed in the council.

The state government must also show in a report why teachers are leaving the profession and how teachers can be retained in schools. The Federal Council should also evaluate the positive and negative effects of national school reforms on students and analyze the additional burden on teachers. (bro/pnr)
