Other cantons do not want to cancel tenants

These buildings in Windisch are intended for asylum seekers.

Municipalities must make room for asylum seekers. But when that happens, as it did with Windisch AG, it causes outrage. Criticism has been pouring in from all sides since it became known on Monday: 49 tenants in three buildings have to give way because of 100 refugees. But the pressure on the canton of Aargau is increasing to give up asylum reception.

authorities are silent

The actions of the cantonal authorities of Aargau raise many questions. Is there no other solution? Was it more about making a stamp? What exactly did the canton mix? Has the company proactively approached the canton and offered the property? The authorities are silent. You are at a dive station. The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs of the responsible government councilor Jean-Pierre Gallati (56, SVP) only says on Tuesday: “It remains with yesterday’s statement.”

And there it was only said that the differences of opinion between the cantonal social service and the municipality of Windisch “would not be conducted through the media”.

In extreme cases, make buildings available

The fact is: the government declared a state of asylum emergency in January. In extreme cases, the official state of emergency would allow Aargau to force individuals or communities to make their buildings available for asylum reception.

But as research in other cantons shows, the situation is currently also difficult there. Evicting long-term tenants to house refugees is something that people elsewhere would like to miss.

For example, Basel-Stadt states that there are sufficient reserve places for the reception of assigned refugees, both for those seeking protection from Ukraine and for refugees from other countries of origin. The very last option is civil protection systems.

Other cantons well prepared

According to the health, social affairs and integration department, the canton of Bern currently has 1,000 free places. Housing is also made available at remote locations, such as the sports center in the municipality of Sumiswald.

Also in Freiburg there are plenty of places in more than 1000 apartments, residential centers and collective housing.
