In January 2023, Swiss retailers notably recorded a nominal sales increase of 0.7 percent. The seasonally adjusted nominal rose 1.2 percent compared to last December, according to provisional results from the Federal Statistics Office (FSO).
But if inflation is taken into account, retail sales fell 2.2 percent year-on-year in real terms in January, as BFS announced on Wednesday.
Retail trade of food, beverages and tobacco products, excluding fuel stations, which is affected by volatility in fuel prices, increased 0.4 percent in nominal sales in January, adjusted for sales and public holiday effects. However, there was also a minus 2.4 percent in real terms. Real sales in the non-food sector decreased by 2.3 percent.
