Swiss ambassador wears a headscarf in Iran

Wearing a headscarf, Swiss ambassador Nadine Olivieri Lozano visited a shrine in Qom, Iran.

Of all things! The Iranian regime continues to crack down on protesters who have died since the death of mahsa jina min barely fading on September 16. The young woman was arrested three days earlier because she was not wearing a headscarf.

And now the Swiss representative in Tehran wears a veil. Our ambassador Nadine Olivieri Lozano made headlines for entering the holy shrine of Fatima wearing a headscarf on Wednesday Masuma in the Iranian city Qom visited.

Fig leaf for the regime

Because the diplomat visits a women’s shrine in a veil, she legitimizes the brutal actions of the mullah regime in the eyes of the regime’s critics: “The fact that the Swiss ambassador visits this shrine is Ordinary shocking,” says the woman who lives in Switzerland Sagi Gholipour To look. “The fact that she appears in a chador while thousands of women fight to take off the headscarves makes it even worse.

The regime could gain more legitimacy hardly wishes: “In the midst of the Iranian revolutionary movement ‘Women – Life – Freedom’, the highest Swiss representative visits one of the most important religious monuments in Iran in the Holy City Qom.» The mullahs now use them, both nationally and internationally, as a fig leaf for their regime, “which still tortures and kills daily,” says the representative Free Iran Switzerland, which organized anti-Iranian demonstrations in Switzerland.

«Protocol is adhered to»

There are even examples on social media of Tehran’s rulers engaging in propaganda with the appearance of the Swiss ambassador. Still, the Department of State (EDA) defended the action. And it does not address the charge that this would legitimize the regime’s actions.

The visit of the Swiss ambassador to Qom was for an academic institution that works in the field of interfaith dialogue and enables its students to participate in interfaith seminars in Switzerland,” says Pierre-Alain Eltschinger of the FDFA. In this context, a short visit to an important religious site took place. “When visiting the religious site, the clothing protocol for women that applied there was observed,” said the FDFA spokesperson.

“Clear position”

And: “The interreligious dialogue is of great importance in the current context.” Switzerland uses all available channels to promote dialogue, including between states within their framework Good Services.

The FDFA further explains: “At the same time, Switzerland repeatedly and clearly takes a position on human rights violations in Iran.” In recent months, she has repeatedly and unequivocally condemned the use of violence against the demonstrators at various levels. She also called on the Iranian authorities to choose the path of de-escalation and enter into dialogue with the demonstrators.

The protest movement in Switzerland should do that hardly calm down: “I wonder: what’s going on with official Switzerland?”, so Gholipour. “Even the congratulations from Federal President Alain Berset last week were absolutely wrong!” Berset had congratulated Iran on the anniversary of the revolution – despite all the brutality of the regime.
