Special Prosecutor is investigating Special Prosecutor

Special investigator Peter Marti is investigating Peter Lauener (l.), the ex-spokesman of Alain Berset (r.). Now Marti herself is in the crosshairs of the judiciary.

Now it’s going to be big: the extraordinary federal prosecutor, Stephan Zimmerli, is allowed to investigate special investigator Peter Marti (70). The former SVP chief judge Marti, who is investigating a possible violation of professional secrecy in the ‘Crypto case’, has to deal with a special lawyer himself.

Marti, who no longer belongs to the SVP, has expanded his research area, as is now known. According to media reports, Marti Peter Lauener, the spokesperson for Health Minister Alain Berset (50), had him arrested for a few days in the spring in connection with a possible breach of professional secrecy in the context of the corona pandemic.

EDA people were also targeted

The fact that Lauener was not in prison for long already indicates that Marti may have gone too far. Lauener, for his part, reported Special Investigator Marti on suspicion of abuse of office and deprivation of liberty.

According to press reports, Marti also targeted employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA). As the “Aargauer Zeitung” reported, it was also the head of the media, namely Michael Steiner, against whom Marti filed a lawsuit. First, Marti targeted former Secret Service chief Markus Seiler (53), who today, as EDA Secretary General, is the most important collaborator of Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis (61).

GPK caused an avalanche

On November 13, 2020, when the audit committees of the Federal Councils filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General for breach of professional secrecy, the parliamentarians unleashed an avalanche. Consequently, the Supervision of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (AB-BA) has appointed Peter Marti as Special Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

At the time, the GPK was angry that information from a confidential inspection report on the “Crypto Case” had been leaked to the press. The two GPK spoke of “serious institutional damage” to which the indiscretions would have resulted.

Crypto has long been forgotten

No one talks about the crypto leaks anymore. The fact that Berset’s chief of media, Lauener, was put behind bars and subsequently resigned at the side of the interior minister, and that two Cassis-related EDA people were discredited, not only caused a stir in Bern but also in public.

Barbara Pretty Schmuki (51), secretary general of the Justice Department of Karin Keller-Sutter (58), has now given permission to Stephan Zimmerli to put Special Investigator Peter Marti to the test. It cannot be ruled out that Marti was actually guilty of deprivation of liberty and abuse of office by the arrest of Lauener.

The presumption of innocence applies to all suspects.
