80 million francs is enough for the Council of States for the time being. The small chamber does not want to increase humanitarian aid for Ukraine again. On Thursday, she rejected a proposal from the National Council demanding an additional loan of CHF 15 million from the Federal Council.
The Council of States thus followed the proposal of its Foreign Affairs Committee (APK-S) without opposition. The motion is off the table.
The National Council had accepted the motion of its Foreign Affairs Committee (APK-N) without any votes against during the summer session. The Bundesrat also agreed to the order at the time.
The request has already been fulfilled
Thursday’s decision by the Council of States should not be interpreted as a substantive no to more aid to Ukraine, says Commission spokesman Daniel Jositsch (57, SP). The request is very justified.
Rather, the majority of the Council considered the motion’s concerns already met. This is because the Federal Council approved an aid loan of CHF 80 million in March and Parliament approved it during the summer session. This includes the requested amount.
The APK-S wrote in the considerations of its application that it is aware that substantial resources are needed to deal with the humanitarian crisis and that the situation can change quickly. The Commission is counting on the Bundesrat to take additional measures if necessary and to secure Parliament’s support. (SDA)
