The initiators of the “call to action” write that the broad support from all layers of Swiss society shows that the blockade vis-à-vis the EU can be overcome. A good compromise can be won today by a majority. This signal strengthens the Federal Council in the upcoming negotiations.
The stabilization of relations between Switzerland and the EU should not take too long. There’s too much at stake. Given the worsening global crises, hesitation and waiting is not a strategy.
Because Switzerland’s best and most reliable allies are its European neighbours. The alternative to a contractually agreed further development of the partnership with the EU is not the status quo, but the erosion of cooperation.
Eight former federal councilors Pascal Couchepin, Joseph Deiss, Ruth Dreifuss, Arnold Koller, Moritz Leuenberger, Doris Leuthard, Ruth Metzler and Samuel Schmid signed the appeal. In addition, numerous celebrities and politicians support the call – including Eva Herzog, Irène Kälin, Monika Rühl, Christoph Franz, Xavier Koller, Adolf Muschg and Claude Nicollier.
