At the Young SVP, a dispute over strategy chief Sarah Regez (30) has escalated. Blick research showed that the SVP politician took part in a meeting with right-wing extremist Martin Sellner (35). The Austrian ‘remigration’ planner appeared in the canton of Zurich – together with the militant group Junge Tat, which is being monitored by Swiss intelligence. Now six cantonal party leaders of the Young Party are calling for Regez’s removal until all allegations are cleared up.
Regez is now taking a stand in a Tiktok video. She does not talk directly about her meeting with Sellner. But the assumption has become widespread in society that you are no longer allowed to associate with certain people, “because otherwise you will immediately be put in a corner,” says Regez.
“And then it is claimed that if you deal with it, this thinking pattern will also be adopted.” However, their political views have already been solidified. If she sat down with someone, she wouldn’t completely change her mind. “Yet it is important to listen to other opinions again and again,” says Regez. “Democracy means that you have to form your own opinion. And you can only form that by exposing yourself to these opinions.”
Regez had already made a similar statement to the “Basler Zeitung”: “I attended countless aperitifs, meetings, stages, lectures and other invitations in 2023, but there was no ‘secret meeting’ – whatever that means –.” she writes to the newspaper upon request. However, she does not deny that she has met Martin Sellner and members of Junge Tat.
She previously told the online portal Prime News that she enjoyed listening to “all movements”. “In this respect I maintain the same ‘relationship’ with Junge Tat as, for example, with the Young Socialists (Juso).”
On Tuesday, parts of the Young SVP Basel-Stadt, Graubünden, Solothurn, Schaffhausen, Thurgau and Säntis demanded from their party a “clear demarcation of extremist groups” and “a commitment to the basic democratic order.”
On Wednesday, the remaining larger young parties around the young FDP, Center and Juso also spoke out in a joint press release and called on the young SVP around President Nils Fiechter (27) to consistently distance themselves from right-wing extremist people and content. “If the Junge SVP does not consistently distance itself from the Junge Tat and Martin Sellner in terms of personnel and content, this would confirm that they are in cahoots,” says Juso boss Nicola Siegrist (27). “Such anti-democratic and inhumane ideologies have no place in our society.”
Fiechter himself also has a private relationship with Regez. He did not want to comment on Tuesday against Blick. “Internal matters are handled internally at Young SVP Switzerland.” (brother)
