OSTP said Tuesday that NASA should submit a plan for new moon time (Coordinated Lunar Time, LTC) by the end of 2026, and that it should apply to both Earth’s satellite and other celestial bodies. OSTP official Steve Welby said establishing a clear standard for safety, navigation and communications in space is critical because time changes depending on your location in space.
It is intended to unify coordinated lunar time with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is the basis for calculating local time on Earth.
OSTP explained that a network of clocks on the moon could be established to regulate lunar time, similar to how world time UTC is regulated by a network of atomic clocks. The United States plans to make a manned landing on the moon in 2026, for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. (SDA)
