Beat Jans is Minister of Justice and Federal Councilor.

About a month ago, Minister of Justice Beat Jans (59) visited the Orthodox Jew who was seriously injured by a 15-year-old in Zurich. With his visit he wanted to show that such an act cannot be accepted, the SP union councilor said in a radio interview.

“I was incredibly happy that he came to me on two legs,” Jans reported in Radio SRF’s Tagestalk. The man is back on the road and well on the road to recovery. He was the victim of a terrible act that must be condemned in all forms. “We as the federal police take this act very, very seriously,” Jans said.

Support promised

With his visit he wanted to show the injured man “that we cannot accept what happened,” the comrade said. He wanted to promise the wounded Jew the highest level of support – on the one hand, that racism and anti-Semitism would be combated at the federal and cantonal levels, and on the other, that crime in Zurich would be closely monitored. so that something like this will never happen again.

One reason for the increased exchange with European authorities is that the perpetrator, who was only fifteen years old, had clearly stated that he wanted to kill people of other religions. He is not alone: in January the so-called Islamic State (IS) called for the death of people of other faiths – Christians or Jews. “The incident in Zurich may be the first implementation of this IS call in Europe,” says Jans.

This is one of the reasons why we are looking very closely at the federal level and intensifying exchanges with Europol, the European police authority.

The number of incidents increased

On March 2, a 15-year-old with Tunisian roots fatally wounded an Orthodox Jew with a stabbing weapon in the city of Zurich. The teen was arrested at the scene.

The number of anti-Semitism incidents in Switzerland has increased sharply after the Palestinian Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 last year and the Israeli army’s counter-attack in the Gaza Strip. (SDA)
