When it comes to illegal parking and speeding in Switzerland: Germans will soon also have to pay fines for buses at home

Germans will also have to pay fines from Switzerland in Germany in the future.

The German ambassador in Bern, Michael Flügger (65), exchanged the ratification documents in Bern on Wednesday with the director of the federal police office, Nicoletta della Valle (63). According to Flügger, the contract will come into effect on May 1.

Until now, traffic offenders could serve the sometimes hefty fines from Switzerland in Germany: fines from countries outside the EU – such as Switzerland or Great Britain – could not be enforced in Germany. Only when they re-entered the country was there a risk of trouble: in Switzerland, traffic offenders then had to expect a fine.

The threshold is 80 francs

The new regulation applies if the monetary claim imposed is greater than 70 euros or 80 francs. These thresholds are quickly reached in Switzerland: a speed of 20 kilometers per hour on the highway costs 180 francs (184 euros), and even more on other roads. In Germany, such a speeding ticket only costs 60 euros.

The prosecution of traffic violations also applies in reverse if Swiss people violate traffic rules in Germany. According to the Federal Police Office, the new police contract also regulates cross-border cooperation in the fight against “terrorists, human smugglers, ATMs and mafiosi”.
