Parliament approves proposal: the canton of Freiburg must ban Nazi symbols

Freiburg’s cantonal parliament voted on Wednesday in favor of a ban on Nazi symbols. It passed a corresponding motion, against the government’s wishes. The Council of State pointed to the prospect of a national solution in vain.

The motion was submitted by two members of the Green and Center factions. The two called for faster action than in federal parliament. Nazi symbols are a universal expression of hatred. The SP recalled the recent increase in anti-Semitic incidents.

A majority in the center and the FDP wanted to rely on federal regulations. The SVP shared this attitude and claimed that there were other inhuman symbols, namely communist ones.

Government for National Solution

Justice director Romain Collaud (FDP) currently saw no reason for stricter action against the use of Nazi symbols. There is already a possibility of sanctions for the display of extremist symbols if this serves to promote an ideology or to denigrate third parties or groups of people.

In return, simply displaying extremist symbols without influencing others is not punishable. Moreover, there are attempts to ban it in Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel and St. Gallen.

He prefers a national solution, Collaud said. This guarantees uniform application of the law, as a ban constitutes an interference with fundamental rights. (SDA)
