The yes to the 13th AHV pension is still in the bones of the civil parties. The next low could come as early as June 9: according to a Tamedia survey, the chances of success for further social expansion are intact. Currently, 64 percent want to vote for a limitation of the premium burden at 10 percent of income.
A scenario that ordinary citizens want to avoid. Accepting the SP initiative would initially cost the federal government and the cantons more than 5 billion francs. “By 2030, costs would increase by as much as 11.7 billion francs annually,” FDP leader Thierry Burkart (48) told Blick.
Following the decision for a 13th AHV pension, which entails additional costs of 5 billion francs annually, the federal government alone would have to finance between 10 and 14 billion francs, the Aargau Council of States warns. It is impossible to save all this elsewhere and it would inevitably result in an increase in taxes and fees at the expense of the middle class and a loss of purchasing power, Burkart said. “We are defending ourselves against this!”
The FDP is therefore taking over political leadership from the impartial No campaign and wants to prevent another left-wing voting coup. “Together with the SVP and GLP we will campaign for a double no,” Burkart explains. He wants to support not only the premium assistance initiative, but also the center’s cost savings initiative.
The party of Gerhard Pfister (61) is left out of the double-no alliance, because the emphasis is on their own desires. This requires the federal government and the cantons to take measures if healthcare costs rise faster than wages. According to the research, approval is currently even higher: 72 percent. But Burkart also warns here: “The Mitte initiative leads to health care rationing.”
One thing is clear: Switzerland faces another tough voting battle. The budgets are not yet public, but this time too a significant amount will probably flow into the campaigns.
However, the task will not be easy for the opponents, because the population is also hurting when it comes to health insurance premiums. But this time, unlike the AHV vote, Burkart has an trump card, because there is an indirect counter-proposal from parliament to the SP initiative on the table.
“The counter-proposal can be financed and still results in relief for those with health insurance of more than 350 million francs per year,” the FDP leader emphasizes. Whether this will appease voters will be decided on June 9.
