Does Nils Fiechter (27) shoot the bird with his latest idea? The Bernese SVP Grand Councilor and chief strategist of the Young SVP makes an explosive move in the cantonal parliament. He wants to introduce a compulsory young shooter course and compulsory firearms training at primary school for Swiss citizens in the canton of Bern.

“There is war in Europe, our people must be able to defend themselves in an emergency – regardless of gender and military service,” Fiechter told Blick. For those behind and last in Switzerland it is now clear how bad security is in Europe.

“In an emergency, a state can choose Switzerland as a strategic target – especially since we have no military alliance to maintain our neutrality,” Fiechter explained his advance. And as several political figures have questioned Switzerland’s neutrality over the adoption of sanctions, Switzerland must prepare for all scenarios.

Weapons training from secondary level 1

“The ability of civilians to use weapons must therefore be guaranteed as early as possible,” Fiechter said. For the Bernese Oberlander this means in concrete terms: weapons training from high school level 1.

Fiechter refers to the primary school law in his motion. This gives the Bernese government council the authority to make the completion of a course for young shooters from the age of 15 and the firearms training coordinated by the canton mandatory learning objectives in the curriculum.

Courses for young riflemen have been part of the Swiss Army training concept since 1909. The federal government already invests almost one million francs per year in shooting training for young people between 15 and 20 years old. Fiechter would like to expand this training.

Acquire knowledge about handling firearms

According to the SVP politician, the young shooter course serves as preparation for shooting training in military service. He learns the use of the 90 assault rifle, the shooting techniques and the camaraderie in the shooting club. The goal: ‘Ensure that participants can handle the weapon independently and responsibly.’

The basic firearms training also aims to provide students with basic knowledge about the safe use of firearms. This includes understanding safety rules, responsibility and respect when handling firearms, legal aspects and practical training.

For Fiechter, the idea isn’t all smoke and mirrors; he has everyone in his sights. No one should be able to avoid using a weapon before training. Exceptions are only possible in justified individual cases. For example, if someone already has a criminal record, poses a threat to public safety or has been medically declared to have psychological or physical disabilities.
