Pitteloud will also be Switzerland’s permanent NATO representative, it said in a statement. The personnel change takes place in the context of the periodic transfers of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA).
Pitteloud has had a long career with the federal government. The now 61-year-old from Valais was coordinator of the Swiss intelligence service from 2000. After several disruptions, the service was reorganized and placed under the leadership of a crisis team. In 2006, Pitteloud joined the EDA, which was then led by federal councilor Micheline Calmy-Rey. In 2010, he became Swiss ambassador to Kenya, after which he became director of resources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Pitteloud was targeted by the judiciary in 2016 after two Kenyan brothers accused him of pressuring them. He allegedly promised them that they would stop a criminal investigation if they paid him 50 million francs.
The investigation against Pitteloud was later closed. The Vaud attorney general responsible for the proceedings, Eric Cottier, ruled that Pitteloud’s actions were permissible. The Federal Criminal Court supported this decision.
