Barracks: Freiburg removes barbed wire from La Poya

State councilor Jean-François Steiert (right) and municipal councilor Elias Moussa (left) symbolically cut the barbed wire in the presence of the press on Thursday afternoon.

The buildings should be preserved but opened to other users such as small businesses or clubs, state councilor Jean-François Steiert told the media in Freiburg on Thursday. In a second step, the canton will carry out a participatory process with the residents of the city to define a project for the site. Being close to two train stations and the city center, this location has numerous advantages for both living and working spaces.

“The General Council of the City of Fribourg called a few years ago for the place to become an eco-district,” said Jean-François Steiert, who pointed out that the canton supports this idea. However, new construction is not conceivable until ten years at the earliest, due to the necessary procedures and possible objections that can be submitted.

There is currently a federal asylum center and a dormitory managed by the canton of La Poya. The federal centre, managed by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), currently houses around 400 people. The total capacity is 500 places. It will be closed until the end of March and residents will be distributed to other facilities in the canton and elsewhere.

The Poyakaserne will initially retain its cantonal accommodation, whose capacity has been reduced to 150 places since its opening. It is currently occupied by 126 people, including 58 unaccompanied minors. Security measures are less stringent and the people housed there can come and go as they please because they have all previously passed through a federal shelter. (SDA)
