More citizens are giving in: more and more soldiers are fleeing the army

The army again lost many of its members last year. The number of people admitted to community service increased by 1.8 percent to 6,754 people.

Access to community service remained high in 2023, as in previous years. This is the third highest number of annual approvals since the introduction of the crime evidence solution in 2009, as shown in the first annual figures of the Federal Civil Service Office (ZIVI), published on Thursday. 3769 people submitted their applications before the RS, 786 people after the start of the RS and 2199 people or almost a third after the passage of the RS.

A peak was also reached in 2023 with 1.8 million days of service (+6.2 percent). As in recent years, citizens spent most of their days in the social, healthcare and school systems.

Hardly any violations were found

What was special was that in the first four months of the year, 14,000 days of service were provided in exceptional support of the federal asylum centers of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

The number of operating companies remained virtually constant at 4,492. The number of inspections increased by 7 percent. Serious violations of enforcement rules were rarely observed.

At the end of December 2023, 58,195 people were subject to community service. Of these, 26,510 people subject to community service have not yet completed all their regular days of service. 31,685 people subject to community service had completed all required regular service days. However, you will remain subject to community service until you are properly released. They can only be used for extraordinary government services ordered by the Federal Council in special and extraordinary situations.

More people are also subject to position

On Thursday, ZIVI also provided figures on job duties: the number of job duties ultimately assessed in the army’s recruitment centers in 2023 was 35,700 people. That was 4.2 percent higher than last year. Of these, 25,199 were eligible for military service, 1.5 percent more than in the previous year.

However, the number admitted to civilian service and the number of conscripts cannot be directly compared, ZIVI writes. While the number of admissions to civilian service measures all newly admitted people subject to community service in a calendar year, regardless of when they were recruited, the number of people subject to military service and those eligible for military service measures a recruitment cohort.
