Requests rejected: Zurich High Court continues trial against police officers

Numerous supporters accompanied Wilson A. (m.) to the trial of a police officer on Thursday.

Shortly after the hearing began, the court denied several requests from the private plaintiff’s attorney. If these had been approved, the process would likely have been paused for a long time.

A police officer and a police officer who were also involved in the arrest have now been legally acquitted. At the beginning of the hearing, the private plaintiff’s lawyer, Wilson A., requested that the two acquitted police officers be called as witnesses. They would have to testify against their colleague, who was group leader during the operation.

Wilson A.’s lawyer has submitted various additional requests for evidence. He demanded, among other things, that a detailed forensic medical report be commissioned into Wilson A.’s injuries.

Before the trial started, several dozen sympathizers gathered in front of the Zurich High Court on Thursday. For them, the case of Wilson A. is a typical case of ‘racial profiling’, that is, racially motivated identity checks by the police.

The case has occupied the Zurich legal system for more than fourteen years. In 2018, he was heard at first instance by the Zurich District Court. The responsible public prosecutor previously wanted to stop the procedure twice and was legally obliged to continue it. The public prosecutor subsequently requested an acquittal for the police officers, contrary to the charges. The court acquitted all three.

The hearing will continue on Thursday afternoon with a plea from Wilson A.’s lawyer. It is not known whether the court will rule on Thursday. (SDA)
