Basel’s energy supplier stops the project after the Hasliberg city council said no: the next setback for the solar express

The Hasliberg BE municipal meeting says no to the construction of a photovoltaic system in the Alps.

It is the next setback for the so-called Solar Express, which is increasingly becoming a local train. On Wednesday evening, the Hasliberg BE municipal council rejected the construction of an Alpine photovoltaic system by the Basel energy supplier IWB. The work on this project will therefore be completed, the IWB announced on Thursday.

Only on Monday evening did the Graubünden municipality of Surses GR sink a high-alpine solar power plant. And these are no longer isolated cases. In Saanen BE, two alpine solar systems were rejected last December, and the project in Ilanz GR was rejected a month earlier. There are also other projects that have been cut together.

Everything was already lined up

In the case of Hasliberg, the facility was planned at Käserstatt, known as part of the Meiringen-Hasliberg ski area. The consent of the landowner, the farming community of Hasliberg, would have been available. This approved the project in May 2023, the municipality of Hasliberg writes. However, the local community’s decision had yet to be made.

The IWB, as the main partner in the project, planned a facility on a sunny south-facing slope at an altitude of 1900 to 2100 above sea level. The intention was for the operators to compensate the local community and landowners with R7 million over the thirty-year life of the system. In addition, the operating company in Hasliberg would have paid taxes, as stated on the website of the ‘Solar Alpin Käserstatt’ project. (SDA)
