About two weeks ago it happened again. More than 12,000 new soldiers entered the recruitment school (RS) with more or less enthusiasm. Swiss must serve 245 days of service. But not everything. Dual nationals can choose which country they want to serve in. Swiss-French dual nationality in particular will probably choose our neighboring country.
In France, the military obligation was fulfilled after just one day, reports the “Tages-Anzeiger”. One participant reported that on this introduction day there were lectures in which the soldiers promoted themselves. Sports testing? No. At the end there is a certificate.
Switzerland accepts this: anyone who “serves” in France does not have to pay mandatory military service contributions in Switzerland – even if the service lasts only one day. About 800 men have used this variant over the past five years, the newspaper writes.
Army spokesman Mathias Volken justifies the current arrangement with legal certainty for dual citizens. No change is planned, as the Federal Council explained four years ago at the request of national councilor Céline Amaudruz (44).
And the system also has a disadvantage for Swiss-French dual nationality. In case of war, if there were mobilization, they would also have to go to war for France. But probably not the first – after all, they are not trained yet.
