The European Women’s Football Championship offers Switzerland the opportunity to give a further boost to girls’ and women’s sports, the Federal Council wrote in response to the proposal adopted on Wednesday. The aim is to increase the number of girls and young women active in sport and to increase the professionalization of women’s football structures.
The federal contribution is therefore intended to support sports promotion measures related to the European Championships of the Swiss Football Association (SFV) and other organizations that specifically promote girls’ and women’s sports.
The amount must be compensated within the Ministry of Defense (VBS) at the Federal Office for Sports (Baspo). Parliament must now decide how the four million francs will be used.
In addition to the federal government, the European Women’s Football Championship is financed by the host cities and cantons, the Federal Council writes. Individual service providers have also contributed. The last major international football event in Switzerland was the 2008 European Championship. (SDA)
