No ban: the Federal Council rejects the fireworks initiative. (symbol image)

The popular initiative “for a restriction of fireworks” demands that loud fireworks such as firecrackers and firecrackers may no longer be sold to private individuals. Such fireworks may no longer be set off by private individuals. The Federal Council rejects the proposal, it announced on Wednesday.

The government is aware that noisy fireworks are experienced as disturbing by part of the population and can provoke reactions in animals. Many cantons and municipalities have already exercised their right to restrict or ban the lighting of fireworks.

According to the initiative, pyrotechnic products that release silently into the air should continue to be permitted. Fireworks must also remain permitted at supra-regional events – with the approval of the canton.
