Green Party Chairman Balthasar Glättli (50) believes in a Green Federal Council next year. In his speech in Winterthur ZH on Saturday, he expressed his confidence in the outcome of next year’s parliamentary elections: “On this basis, a Green candidacy for the Federal Council has a real chance in a year.”
Glättli, on the other hand, again described the upcoming replacement election for outgoing SVP Federal Councilor Ueli Maurer (71) as a “planned contest”. He let it be known that he missed the support of SP and GLP.
Greens want to be the third strongest party
Ahead of next year’s federal election, Glättli reaffirmed the election goal stated earlier: “We Greens want to be the third strongest force in the federal parliament by 2023.” In the 2019 National Council elections, the Greens came fourth with party strength of 13.2 percent, behind SVP, SP and the FDP. No other party in the cantons has grown as much as the Greens since the last election, Glättli said.
At the same time, Glättli handed out. He criticized the SVP for painting ghosts on the wall in energy policy rather than presenting solutions. Glättli accuses the Federal Council of burying its head in the sand when it comes to important issues such as European policy or energy.

“More greenery is needed in Parliament and the Federal Council to tackle the greatest challenge of our time – the climate crisis,” Glättli said. With the right alliances, the Greens could move Switzerland. (lazy/SDA)
