Ueli Schmezer missed the National Council elections in the fall. But he is in the first substitution position.

Recently he wanted to become a member of the Federal Council, now he wants to become a member of the Bern city council. SP national councilor Matthias Aebischer (56) wants to defend the vacant seat in the municipal council for the SP. The party announced this on Tuesday evening.

If Aebischer were elected in November, he would give up his seat in the National Council, he confirmed to Blick. “Working in a 120 percent position is incompatible with working in the National Council,” said the former SRF presenter. Especially because he sits on three committees there.

If Aebischer succeeds in the elections, another SRF man would inherit his place in the Bundestag. The former ‘Kassenrutsch’ presenter and musician Ueli Schmezer (62) would slip in. He would still be available for office if he confirmed his political ambitions.

Attack on the city council?

The SP delegates must then decide during the general meeting on March 25. If everything goes according to plan, Aebischer will be nominated next to sitting municipal councilor Marieke Kruit (56). SP financial director Michael Aebersold (61) will no longer stand for election this fall. In addition to Aebischer, former municipal councilor Katharina Altas (56) and grand councilor Stefan Jordi (52) have also shown interest in running.

The SP has also not yet decided whether they want to attack the municipal council in November. This is currently being carried out by former State Councilor Alec von Graffenried (61). He belongs to the Green Free List and has no plans to voluntarily transfer the office to another party.
