The number of asylum applications will likely remain high: the federal government predicts around 30,000 asylum applications

class=”sc-cffd1e67-0 fmXrkB”>

According to the federal government, a similar number of people are likely to apply for asylum in Switzerland in 2024 as last year.

The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) predicts a similarly high number of asylum applications in Switzerland for 2024 as last year. The SEM expects another 28,000 to 30,000 applications, a spokesperson told Swiss radio SRF on Friday morning.

Predictions are difficult due to the current problem areas in Ukraine, the Middle East and several African countries. If a conflict comes to a head or a major event occurs, the SEM expects numbers to increase. The final figures for 2023 are still pending.

The number of asylum applications through the normal procedure rose sharply in late summer and autumn, but has recently fallen slightly again, the SEM announced before the end of the year. Migratory pressure is unlikely to decrease in the short and medium term. Housing for asylum seekers has sometimes reached its limits in recent months. (SDA)
