Ski holidays are an expensive pastime. This is especially true during busy weeks such as Christmas, New Year and sports holidays. But winter sports enthusiasts can definitely take advantage of discounts during January’s infamous slump.

From mid-January, Veysonnaz in Valais will attract the attention of visitors, especially with its cheap offers. The small village in the French-speaking part of the canton offers direct access to the huge 4 Vallées ski area. Looking at Booking.com’s booking portal, the cost of a studio or small apartment in the January fall ranges from 570 to 1000 francs. The daily ticket of the ski area will be available for sale on January 15 at 69.30 francs. That is, at least 15 francs cheaper than the current high season price.

If you are looking for accommodation for a small group, you may also want to consider a house in the neighboring town of Veysonnaz. For the week between 15 and 21 January, the price of Chalet Le Joyau in Nendaz is 2,430 francs. It can accommodate six people. That’s only 400 francs per nose. For a week in a chalet in mid-February you would have to spend 4,081 francs.

During the quieter period of January, it’s a good idea to visit the jacuzzi instead of après ski. This may be possible, for example, at the MAD Mount Hotel & Spa in Nendaz. A family with two young children pays 2,434 francs for a four-bed room in a 3-star hotel in mid-January. For sports holidays, 3,755 francs must be paid for the same offer. The couple’s stay at the Lifestyle & Spa Hotel Grächerhof in Grächen VS currently costs 1,428 francs on Booking for a week in mid-January. The couple will currently need to spend 2,356 francs during their sports holiday.

“In the period between 26 December and 6 January, 95 to 100 percent of hotels in Valais are occupied,” says Olivier Andenmatten (48), co-president of the Valais Hotel Association. But after that, occupancy in many companies drops to 35 to 40 percent on weekdays and 80 to 100 percent on weekends, even in January.

Companies with empty beds can help with discounts. “Many businesses are likely to be at least 20 or 30 percent cheaper during the week than during the main season,” says Andenmatten. The goal is to attract additional guests, who ideally dine at the hotel in the evening. However, hoteliers do not believe in big discounts of 35 percent or more. “This reduces the value of the product. Also, fixed costs remain the same.” An alternative: Enhance the offer with additional services.

Luxury rooms for half price

Couples can stay at the 4-star Hôtel de Rougemont & Spa hotel for a week in January for 2,779 francs. The same double room with balcony and mountain view is currently almost twice as expensive on Booking.com for the week of February 12. The ski area in Rougemont VD is connected to the area in Gstaad BE. Mountain railways to the Gstaad destination also offer daily tickets for 55 to 60 francs from mid-January. Well below the maximum price of 79 francs. Additionally, a double room with a queen bed at the 4-star Hotel Gstaaderhof is around 40 percent cheaper than sports holidays in mid-January; 2,017 francs.

If you want something a little cheaper, you’ll find what you’re looking for at the 3-star Hotel Terrace in Engelberg OW. There, from January 15 to 21, two adults pay 1,090 francs for a standard twin room. In mid-February, the price of the same room is 50 percent more. A lot can also be saved in luxury temples in mid-January: at the 5-star Kempinski Palace in Engelberg, a couple is currently booking a luxury double room for 4,176 francs. According to Booking.com, a stay at the hotel temple from February 12 to 18 costs 5,474 francs.

Arosa offers a 36 percent discount

A week at Hotel Faern Arosa Altein GR from mid-January costs 2,100 francs for a couple. He would have to pay 3,110 francs in mid-February. A deluxe single room at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa costs 5,470 francs in the same week in January; The price of a room in a 5-star hotel in February is 7,320 francs. During this period, huge discounts are also offered on the mountain railway. Buying a day ticket for the Arosa-Lenzerheide region currently costs 57 francs; This represents a 36 percent reduction compared to the maximum price.

Bargains are also possible in Andermatt RI: A couple pays 1,410 francs per week for a standard apartment studio in the second half of January. The cost for six nights in mid-February was 2,100 francs.
