During the festive season, peace and contemplation also return to the state government. To escape the hectic daily life of politics, federal councilors hit the cross-country ski trails, go skiing or otherwise enjoy time with their families.

SVP Federal Councilor Albert Rösti (56) celebrates Christmas at his home in Uetendorf BE or with his parents in Kandersteg BE, where he grew up. Rösti wrote to the Keystone-SDA news agency when asked about the classic fondue chinoise at Christmas. Weather permitting, he also takes a short ride on cross-country skis.

Tongue and sausage meat

SP federal councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) plays, reads and discusses with her husband’s four siblings and their families, the Federal Ministry of Justice and Police (FDJPD) said upon request. Like every year, the Christmas meal consists of pies with mushrooms, sausage meat, veal milk and tongue. A roulade (Bûche de Noël) is served for dessert.

The Christmas menu for FDP federal councilor Ignazio Cassis (62) is not yet known. This was always a surprise to him, wrote the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA). The Ticino resident celebrates with his mother and siblings.

Amherd skis

Future Federal President Viola Amherd (61) relaxes with her family at Christmas. This also includes active relaxation while skiing in the Valais mountains. The central magistrate also uses the few days off to prepare files for the new year, writes Defense (VBS). The transfer of office between Amherd and the outgoing Federal President Alain Berset (51) also takes place during this period.

Retiring SP councilor Berset celebrated with his family. The Federal Ministry of the Interior (EDI) did not provide any further details.

Neo-federal councilor Beat Jans (59) is also at work. Until he takes office on January 1, 2024, he will delve deeper into the files of his department, the EJPD.

Quiet days with loved ones

In short, all federal council members enjoy the quiet days with their loved ones. “There are a few days when the hustle and bustle you normally experience comes to a standstill. I enjoy it very much and it gives me strength,” says FDP federal councilor Karin Keller-Sutter (60).

The SVP Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin (64) also used the festival of reflection to reflect, writes his department (WBF). He celebrated it with his wife, her mother and his father. (SDA)
