Gifts with a twist: Berset has a skydive as a farewell

Real joy looks different: Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and Alain Berset at the traditional key handover.

‘Friend, enemy, party friend’, is how the legendary German CSU chairman Franz Josef Strauss (1915-1988) once coined the catchy Bonmont. An increase that also has some truth in the Swiss SP.

This also became apparent on Friday afternoon during the official key transfer at the Ministry of the Interior (EDI). The title of the event is misleading: current Interior Minister Alain Berset (51) and future Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) met in a conference room, flanked by cameras, to present each other with a gift. That’s what tradition wants.

She has an hourglass

Even though the two SP magistrates smiled, the meeting was not particularly cordial. Baume-Schneider gave Berset a farewell parachute jump after his twelve years in the Federal Council. After all, you have to be prepared for all eventualities, she noted with her gift. A swipe at Berset’s hobby, flying – and at his misfortune.

Last summer, Berset was taken out of service by the French air force because he accidentally entered restricted airspace with his propeller plane.

And Berset? He gave Baume-Schneider an hourglass. The pink sand you see running away must symbolize that their time is almost up. No, that is interpreted somewhat maliciously. The clock represents “the time needed for reform in this department,” Berset said. Consider, for example, the pension reform or the major construction site in healthcare.

“Lots and lots of fun”

Berset also told the Justice Minister that he wished her “lots of fun” with her new duties. The Interior Department is a “great department.” There was a colorful bouquet of flowers in front of the hourglass. Baume-Schneider feigned enthusiasm, just like you do when your in-laws give you a pair of socks.

You can only wish the two that their loved ones will put even more loving gifts for them under the Christmas tree.
