With Beat Jans (59), Basel finally has a federal councilor again – for the first time since the resignation of Hans-Peter Tschudi at the end of 1973. Jans is the successor to Alain Berset. The celebrities from the Rhine Bend are satisfied – and are also making their first demands of the new Federal Council.
«Congratulations to federal councilor Jans! Because of my Basel origins, I am particularly pleased that we have a Basel resident in the Federal Council again after an absence of fifty years. I wish him much tactical insight, courage and decision-making ability. And the right match plan with his teammates in the Federal Council.”
«I am very happy with his choice! Roger Federer, FC Basel and now Beat Jans! He is a popular figure and will certainly represent the interests of the Swiss people well. Congratulations, BeatJans!”
“A direct line to Bern is crucial for the successful further development of the Basel economic region. We are convinced that with his expertise and assertiveness he can do a lot for the region.”
«After 50 years we finally have a Federal Council again! Beat Jans must now listen to the concerns of the many homeowners in Bern, just as he did in Basel. Hopefully he will not accommodate tenants in everything like other leftists. We hope he will not support a requirement for tenant monitoring forms, rent control, or exclusive support for cooperative properties.
«I congratulate Beat Jans on his election and wish him much success, strength and endurance. I am convinced that he will bring important urban and cross-border elements to the Federal Council for the Euroairport.
“I am very happy. It is high time that another federal councilor from the Basel or Baselland region came again. I do not know Beat Jans personally yet, but I hope I can invite him to an ice hockey match at EHC Basel. not to be afraid of having to make big speeches; anyone who knows me knows that I’m the one who likes to chat.”
“Personally, I am happy for Beat Jans and we at Basel Tourismus are all extremely proud that he is now a sympathetic and competent ambassador for our city in the Federal Council. Switzerland is our main source market and thanks to Jans, the benefits of Basel – or at least the Basel dialect – will be increasingly noticed across the country.”
“We congratulate Beat Jans on his election as a member of the Federal Council and wish him all the best and much success in his new position. We are pleased that such a dedicated representative of the Basel region is moving to the Federal Council.”
«The election of Beat Jans means a lot for Basel, perhaps even more than we realize today. For me, it is also a (long overdue) signal from our Parliament to Basel, to a region and a city that is very relevant economically and politically for Switzerland. I am satisfied. Beat Jans and I met again and again in our different roles. He impressed me because he did not make his connection with FC Basel dependent on whether we were in the news positively or negatively – on the contrary: he showed special interest in the context and then supported the club – for example because of fan and safety issues – was vulnerable and therefore an easy target for undifferentiated criticism. For me he showed backbone, which I really appreciate in politicians.”
“Truly a historic day that our city, our region and our citizens have been longing for. Just a few weeks ago I had the honor of welcoming Beat Jans on the final day of the Swiss Indoors. Then I had the feeling that as a statesman he would climb Mount Everest. It is now clear that Beat Jans is the right and worthy successor to Alain Berset.”
«It’s nice to know that the region and urban Switzerland are so well represented in Bern. This is good for the soul of Basel. From the Federal Council’s point of view, it was a bit damaged.”
“It is important for the self-image of a federalist Switzerland that all regions are alternately represented in the Federal Council. Basel is a central location for business and culture in Switzerland and is now represented for the first time in more than 50 years. So it’s high time! Beat Jans is certainly a worthy representative of urban Switzerland as a whole – so it is as important an election for the entire country as it is for the Basel metropolitan region. People will be happy here, but they will hardly burst into the same joy as if FCB were finally Swiss champions again!
“We warmly congratulate Prime Minister Beat Jans on his election as a member of the Federal Council and welcome the fact that the Basel region is once again represented in the Federal Council as an important life science location.”
