Due to being on someone else’s list: Bern SVP excludes Madeleine Amstutz from the party

Grand councilor Madeleine Amstutz has been arguing with her party for years.

The management had unanimously decided on the exclusion, party chairman Manfred Bühler confirmed upon request of information from the online news portal “Bärn Today” of the Keystone-SDA news agency. The management accepted a corresponding request from the Thun department.

The reason for the exclusion was Amstutz’s candidacy on lists that did not belong to the SVP. In doing so, she violated the party statutes.

According to the statutes, Amstutz can appeal the decision to the party board within 30 days. Nothing has been decided about this yet, Amstutz wrote when asked. Management’s decision was made last November 21, as evidenced by a letter from the SVP, which is available to Keystone-SDA.

Until 2020, Amstutz was well established in the party and was, among other things, parliamentary group leader of the SVP in the Grand Council. She was also mayor of Sigriswil. In this role, she was accused of receiving too many expenses. Amstutz filed a complaint against this and was not required to reimburse any costs following a decision by the office of Thun’s governor.

However, the dispute was not settled: in the meantime, Amstutz was not nominated for municipal elections due to the accusations by the local SVP. She then founded a second local SVP chapter. This was not well received by the canton party, because it considered the SVP brand to be protected.

Amstutz was also not nominated by the SVP for the cantonal elections in March 2022 and for the federal elections in October 2022. As a result, she ran on her own list. She managed to get re-elected to the Grand Council, but it was not enough that she was re-elected to the National Council.
