Now the final piece: The direct mail company’s delivery service will be shut down on June 1, 2024.

This decision, announced almost seven weeks ago, is now final. The Post Office will close its Direct Mail Company (DMC) delivery service on 1 June 2024. This will result in the loss of approximately 4,000 jobs. The consultation process did not produce a follow-up solution. “Not a single job can be saved,” says staff association Transfair.

The majority of affected employees work part-time. Many need support to make ends meet. At the beginning of November, Postal Board President Christian Levrat (53) gave hope. He emphasized that a solution would be found for at least the 72 DMC permanent employees at that time. However, it is now clear that there is no room at the postal company for staff with higher workloads.

Great sadness from social partners

Social partners are disappointed. “While it wasn’t a huge surprise, there was still hope that some of the approximately 4,000 jobs might have been preserved,” Transfair said. The Syndicom union was also disappointed that no resolution had been found for those affected.

The next step now is to negotiate the social plan at the beginning of 2024. Staff representatives say this should take into account the different life situations and fates of those affected.

Closing sales at DMC means the loss of a vital financial foundation for many people. Diego Frieden (39) from Transfair: “The main issue now is to provide compensation as well as training and further training measures so that staff have the best chance in the job market.”

On October 25 of the current year, they announced that they wanted to close the delivery organization in their subsidiaries. Shortly before Christmas, the hopes of those affected for continued employment within the group were dashed.
