The hunt is in full swing: the residents of Valais have already shot ten wolves

In Valais, almost a third of the planned wolf killings have already taken place in the first week of the wolf hunt. Since December 1, game wardens and hunters have shot ten wolves. The mountain canton wants to eliminate a total of seven packs, just over thirty predators.

Five more animals have been shot since Thursday. This is stated on the canton’s website, where the animals killed are listed. Three of these shot animals therefore belonged to the pack in the Val d’Hérens. One adult wolf was shot by a licensed hunter and two cubs were shot by game wardens.

Game rangers also shot a young wolf from the Nanz pack and another from the Augstbord pack. Five other specimens, including an adult, had already been killed between December 1 and 5.

According to the canton, hunting is a “difficult undertaking”

The hunt for the more than twenty Valais wolves to be shot will continue until the end of January 2024. When the regulatory measures were presented in mid-November, the canton spoke of a “difficult undertaking” to achieve the shooting target within this period.

He estimated that the operation would be a “great success” if it managed to eliminate “between 10 and 15” wolves within two months. To support him in his task, the canton deployed fighters who had to undergo special training.

With the new hunting rules, wolves in Switzerland can be shot preventively before they have caused any damage. At the end of November, the Federal Office for the Environment approved applications from five cantons to shoot a total of twelve wolf packs. (SDA)
