Nobody gets a mandarin: Santa Claus takes care of politicians in Bern

Unexpected visit from Sinterklaas.

Suddenly there was joy in the Bernese Grand Council as Santa Claus climbed onto the speaker’s podium. Some politicians were probably happy hoping to collect a gift on Sinterklaas Day. After all, the representatives of the receiving canton love gifts.

But (oh horror!) the Sinterklaas bag was as full as the Bernese budget without financial compensation – it contained no more than a bottle of grappa. Apparently Santa was joking. Because the souvenir rhymes with Rappa, the last name of the chairman of the Great Council.

Francesco Rappa might now be tempted to take the grappa with him on the hunt. The residents of Bern are allowed to continue photographing wild animals under the influence of alcohol. Last week the Grand Council rejected a change in the law that would put an end to this.

Bartli is skeptical

Bad luck for Sinterklaas. As is known, he lives in the woods and would probably prefer that the hunters did not shoot around his hut. We can only hope that the shooters hit the target accurately with a shot of ethanol in their blood.

But Bartli is skeptical. “Hunting with alcohol in your blood gives you good courage,” he told the politicians. But fortunately Santa Claus knows how to protect himself. «My coat is thick and red. It protects against wolves and shots.”

If only the politicians had banned drinking while hunting. Then Santa Claus might have had tangerines in his luggage. Or if the people of Bern had been particularly busy this year, there might even have been chocolate. But even this Wednesday, the political debate dragged on so much that politicians were forced to postpone certain matters.

Finally, Santa Claus might have been a little more generous if the people of Bern had at least said something to him. A suggestion for next time: “Sinterklaas, dear Ma, really a lot of money, huh?”
