“Unelectable” as federal councilor: officers shoot at SP office

SP national councilor Jon Pult has been critical of the army several times in the past. He is therefore not eligible as a federal councilor of the Swiss Military Association.

The military never forgets. And so Jon Pult (39), candidate for the SP Federal Council, is and will remain ineligible for the Swiss Association of Military Companies (VMG) – especially in such a tense security situation with the war in Ukraine and the newly emerging conflict in Middle East. As a federal councilor, the ‘Swiss known enemy of the army’ would be partly responsible for the army and the security of Switzerland. For VMG chairman Stefan Holenstein (61), that would be “simply incredible”.

The military association therefore publicly calls on parliament not to vote in the elections for the Federal Council on December 13. A thorn in the side of the officers is not only the SP party program, which still aims to abolish the army in the long term. Because then the VMG would have to shoot at Basel government president Beat Jans (59). On the contrary, Pult is in danger of becoming entangled in his personal past.

Fought against WEF operations

The officers will never forget that in 2006, at the age of 21, Pult became involved as a member of the so-called Soldiers Committee Against Army Operations at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, GR. The anti-aircraft soldier from Graubünden demanded that the army not take on police duties.

And that’s not all: in the parliamentary debate on the increase in the army budget a year ago, the SP vice-chairman described it as ‘complete nonsense’, the VMG complained in a statement – and this in the middle of the Ukraine war. At the time, Pult advocated investments in sustainable energy supplies instead of in the military.

Parliament must assume “state political responsibility”.

Pult is “walking in the wake of the abolitionists of the SP army,” concludes VMG president Holenstein. A possible election to the state government is simply unacceptable. That is why the military association with its approximately 100,000 members appeals to the “state political responsibility” of the Federal Assembly – and advises against the election of Pult.

In the worst case, Pult could even take over the Ministry of Defense (VBS) instead of the vacant Ministry of the Interior from the retiring Alain Berset (51), the officers predict. However, there are no signs of such a change.

However, Holenstein and his colleagues absolutely do not want to have a representative on the Federal Council who “permanently undermines the continued efforts of the militia associations and those serving in the military and civil defense in favor of the security and freedom of our country.” At this time, the highest state authority cannot tolerate any experiment in security policy.
