The deal is already dry: Switzerland sells 25 Leopard 2 tanks to the German arms company Rheinmetall Landsysteme. The contract has been signed.
Germany has assured that the tanks will either remain in the country or only go to NATO or EU partners to plug their own gaps, but not to Ukraine.
With the deal, Switzerland is also strengthening its own arms industry, writes the ‘Neue Zürcher Zeitung’. The German Bundeswehr is scraping together all operational Leopard 2s to build a powerful tank brigade in Lithuania, it is said.
According to the article, Switzerland has used its favorable starting position to strengthen the federal defense company Ruag MRO Switzerland. The sale gives him the know-how to bring the Swiss Leopard 2 fleet up to date: both the 134 active main battle tanks and the 71 decommissioned tanks.
Various parts of the Leo tanks come from Rheinmetall. This includes the cannon and the so-called fire control system. Rheinmetall now wants to enable Ruag to independently implement important updates to these components. In this way, the precision and speed of the tanks’ fire can be improved, as well as the networking of the weapon system.
The German Rheinmetall also undertakes to conclude counter-agreements with the Swiss arms industry equal to the sales price. However, there is silence about the price.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is also in urgent need of additional battle tanks. The tank deliveries so far are not enough to allow the country attacked by Russia to defend itself. (pt)
