Nearly three years after voters voted no to a private e-ID, the Federal Council on Wednesday approved the template for the introduction of a state solution. According to current plans, electronic ID will be offered from 2026.
The message about the federal law on electronic ID and other electronic evidence (BGEID) will reach parliament about six months later than announced in early December 2022. After the consultation, the template was adjusted on a number of points. For example, changes took place in the group of people entitled to an E-ID, the process for issuing it, data protection aspects, user-friendliness and the supporting organization.
Overall, the planned e-ID was positively received, the Federal Council wrote. It was particularly welcomed that the state would become the manager of the trust infrastructure necessary for the operation of the E-ID.
In its first attempt, the E-ID law failed at the ballot box in March 2021. A private solution was discussed at the time. According to post-vote surveys, security concerns related to data protection were the deciding factor in the no vote. (SDA)
