PvdA leader: MP Van Dijk unlikely to return to party

It is unlikely that Gijs van Dijk will return as a member of parliament for the PvdA. That says the party leader Esther-Mirjam Sent. In her opinion, the content of the research report on the cross-border behavior of the former MP remains intact, despite criticism from the PvdA Appeal Committee.

For reasons of confidentiality, the content of the report was not shared with the committee, which was therefore unable to determine whether the board’s assessment of Van Dijk’s behavior was correct and therefore canceled the sanctions against Van Dijk yesterday. “The committee doesn’t think it can be traced because they don’t know the contents,” says Sent. “But the report will not be destroyed, the report stands.”

Van Dijk resigned as an MP in February after women accused him of breaking the law. The PvdA came to the conclusion after an investigation this summer that he was guilty of this.

No other functions

In response to the investigative report, the party executive ruled that Van Dijk would not be allowed to return to the party as an MP for four years or hold any other positions within the PvdA, but these sanctions were therefore lifted.

In theory, Van Dijk could replace his party colleague Khadija Arib in the House of Representatives, who is expected to formally resign as an MP soon after being faced with an investigation into her performance as Speaker of the House. Incidentally, it’s not clear if Van Dijk wants to return indoors; he did not comment on this.
