More than 100,000 francs less: the election defeat costs the GLP and the Greens a lot

Minus five seats for the Greens, minus six seats for the GLP. Election Sunday was a disaster for both parties. This also has financial consequences. The factions receive money from the federal government for their secretariats: a basic contribution of 144,500 francs and an additional 26,800 francs per faction member.

This is what the elections mean for Chiesa and Co.

In the last legislature, the GLP received 573,500 francs per year. They will have to make do with 412,500 francs in the future, calculates the Keystone-SDA news agency. After all: if Tiana Angelina Moser (44) is elected to the Council of States in Zurich, there will be some more money.

Cutbacks in staff

Co-secretary general Ahmet Kut does not yet want to reveal where the GLP needs to save money. “There will be cuts in all functions – including staff,” he told Blick. Kut himself leaves the GLP after almost seven years. However, his resignation has nothing to do with the elections and the financial consequences.

The Greens will also have to make do with less money over the next four years. During this term, the Greens received 1.08 million francs every year. Now it will be at least 187,600 francs or even 214,400 francs if Lisa Mazzone (35, GE) misses the re-election in the second round. Greta Gysin (40) in Ticino and Raphaël Mahaim (39) in Vaud have outsider Green chances for a seat in the Council of States – and therefore more money for the party.

“The contributions of the parliamentary groups are an important pillar for us,” admits Green Party Secretary General Rahel Estermann. The budget for the coming year is still being prepared. “The goal is not to reduce our secretariat and campaign capabilities.” We aim to increase the size of the secretariat in 2021 and 2022. In the 2023 election year, the number of employees generally increased – with fixed-term contracts until after the elections.

The Secretary-General cannot yet say whether and how many personnel will be saved. But she emphasizes: “The number of members and donations is growing, and not just in election years. These are also important pillars for our finances.”

A windfall for the SVP

In return, the SVP can be happy: she will receive more money in the future, probably even more than two million francs. The party won nine additional seats and members of smaller parties such as the Lega, the MCG (Mouvement citoyens genevois) or the EDU were also able to join the faction. Then the increase increases even further. (brother)
