There are always trends or so-called challenges that generate a lot of clicks and money on TikTok and other social media platforms – but are sometimes very dangerous. Lately, it’s the “Hot Chip Challenge” that has been causing a stir. You eat an extremely spicy tortilla chip and film yourself.
The test of courage has already resulted in children and young people having to be treated in hospital. In the US, even a death has been linked to the “Hot Chip Challenge”.
A few weeks ago, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) warned against eating the chips. Now companies have recalled several batches of the product.
Highly fluctuating and sometimes extremely high levels of capsaicin were found in the “Hot Chip Challenge” product, according to a warning published on the online portal of the German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety.
A website selling the product gives Scoville values between 1.8 and 2.2 million. For comparison: the classic Tabasco sauce contains about 4000 Scoville. Many providers state that they only sell the chips to people over the age of 18 – but it is questionable whether this is actually checked.
The warning states that the very high spiciness can cause nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, burning eyes and irritated mucous membranes. The supervisory authorities now have numerous official reports on different batches of the product. Probably everyone is affected.
Customers who have purchased the item can return it in consultation with the seller for a refund of the purchase price and presentation of the invoice. “Please also talk to children and young people in your area and point out the dangers to them,” the warning reads.
A total of two companies from Frankfurt and Giessen have recalled the product. It was delivered to a large part of the federal states: in addition to Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein, Berlin, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are also affected.
