On December 13, 2023, Parliament will elect the successor to Minister of the Interior Alain Berset (51). But that’s not all: the “eighth Federal Council”, the Chancellor, will also be re-elected. Walter Thurnherr (60) is not seeking re-election after eight years in office.

Now it is clear: the SVP is even running with two candidates. Nathalie Goumaz from French-speaking Switzerland and Gabriel Lüchinger from German-speaking Switzerland are participating in the race.

Secretaries General of the Department and Party Headquarters

Goumaz, born in 1965, lives in the canton of Fribourg. From 2016 to the end of 2018, she was Secretary General of the Federal Ministry of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). Since the beginning of 2019, she has held the same position at the Department of Economy, Education and Research (WBF) under the leadership of SVP federal councilor Guy Parmelin.

Gabriel Lüchinger, born in 1977, lives in Herzogenbuchsee in the canton of Bern and is the former general secretary of the SVP Switzerland. He is currently head of the International Security Department of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA).

GLP also competes

The previous Vice Chancellor Viktor Rossi is running for the GLP. After school, Rossi apprenticed as a chef, then graduated from high school and studied economics and law. As vice-chancellor, he prepares the more than 2,000 cases of the Federal Council, which he approves every year. He’s already at the meeting.

Second Vice Chancellor André Simonazzi (55) is also thinking out loud about his candidacy. He is seriously considering a candidacy. The decision will be made in consultation with his party. Simonazzi is an SP member. It says check all options. “We are in discussions with Vice Chancellor Simonazzi. We will decide on the rest in the parliamentary group in the coming weeks,” writes media spokeswoman Lena Allenspach.

There are different views on the role of the Chancellor. There is talk of a “better secretary”, but on the other hand he participates in the weekly meeting of the Federal Council, has an advisory vote and can also submit proposals. (SDA/brother)
