Agreement also reached by GM: strike at American car manufacturers is coming to an end

After the UAW union reached an agreement with General Motors, the major strike in the American auto industry appears to be coming to an end. (Recorded September 18, 2023)

According to Bloomberg news agency, representatives of the UAW auto union and GM have agreed, among other things, on a 25 percent increase in hourly wages and an inflation adjustment.

The tentative agreement at GM is reportedly similar to the agreements at Ford and Stellantis. According to the American television channel CNBC, negotiations at GM lasted from late Sunday evening until Monday morning. Representatives of the company and the union initially left a request from the AFP news agency about the agreement unanswered.

Under the tentative agreements, the UAW cleared its members to return to work. Employees must now approve the provisional agreements by vote. According to information from negotiating circles, this could take up to two weeks.

After the deal at GM, US President Joe Biden spoke of “historic” and “record-breaking agreements” that would reward auto industry workers for their self-sacrificing work to “keep the industry going.”

The UAW union, which represents about 146,000 workers in the U.S. auto industry, used the strikes to emphasize its demands for significant pay increases and additional vacation days.

For the first time, employees of the so-called “Big Three” of the American auto industry – General Motors, Ford and Stellantis of the Chrysler brand – went on strike at the same time. The work stoppages began in mid-September and were expanded several times by the UAW, with up to 45,000 workers participating. (SDA)
