Adolf Ogi served in the Federal Council for the SVP from 1987 to 2000.

Former SVP federal councilor Adolf Ogi (81) examines his party after its election victory on October 22. “The SVP must take leadership,” says the Bernese in a podcast by the French-language Swiss newspaper “Le Temps”. It is important to remind the SVP that it bears responsibility as the strongest party. “The SVP must show that it is a governing party.”

The SVP should not always just say no

Ogi focuses on the two camps that exist within the SVP. The right wing of Zurich – and the ‘sensible’ ones among whom he counts himself. Nowadays the majority are not among the sensible people. Ogi makes it clear that he regrets this. “The sympathy of the SVP ensures that you are willing to find solutions and not always say no.”

He also criticizes the positioning of the SVP in European politics. Switzerland must improve relations with Europe and find a ‘modus vivandi’ with the EU. “This is a priority!” But with the new parliament this will become even more difficult than it already was. He openly admits that this is one of the reasons for strengthening the SVP.

Ogi calls for nine federal council members

He mentions stability, migration, security and government reforms as major challenges that, according to Ogi, require leadership from the SVP. According to him, the latter is already far too late. Nine instead of seven federal councilors are needed, and the office of federal president may not be transferred to someone else every year, but only every three years. He advocated this model in an interview with the “NZZ” in May.

“The Federal Councils are overloaded.” Now is the time to think about reforms. (lha)
