Editorial about the plans of the Green Federal Council: Political escape from reality

Balthasar Glättli’s friends stood there naked. The entourage then passed through Zurich. Under the motto ‘Flying instead of racing’, the Sponti Troop ZAF (“Züri Carfrei!”) demonstrates against motorized traffic. The coup became the talk of the town.

That was in the nineties. Thirty years later, on election Sunday, Glättli, now 51 years old and chairman of the Green Party, stood in front of the cameras in Bern, wearing a shirt and vest. His party had just lost 3.2 percentage points of the vote. When asked about his own future, he referred to the upcoming faction meeting.

However, yesterday they surprised everyone with a completely different decision: instead of calling for a fresh start at the top, they called for an attack on the magic formula. In the renewal elections for the Federal Council, the Greens want to attack the FDP seat of Ignazio Cassis.

Perhaps you can keep your own customer base happy this way, but the question arises: what’s the point?

There are no allies in sight for the maneuver far and wide. At least not the common people, nor the political center. That would leave the SP. But because the successor to SP man Alain Berset is last on the agenda on December 13, the comrades will do something damned and participate in risky games in the previous voting rounds.

The reckless refusal of any strategic reason, this aimless political flight from reality fits the image presented by the Greens over the past 24 hours: the day before yesterday, Friday, they failed to end their meeting as planned. At 7 p.m., they were escorted out of the Federal Palace due to a light show, leaving journalists stunned. On Saturday they had to continue the discussion virtually.

Once a spontaneous bunch, always a spontaneous bunch.

The amateurish approach does not create confidence in a party that wants to take responsibility. It is bitterly ironic that the Greens demonstrate their immaturity by entering government with a candidacy for the Federal Council. Glättli’s friends are standing there naked again.
