LGBTQ activist had to sleep on it twice: Anna Rosenwasser accepts election as national councilor

Anna Rosenwasser: LGBTQ activist, political influencer and SP national councilor in the canton of Zurich, who has been elected since Sunday.

She had to sleep twice to decide whether she wanted to accept the position at all. Anna Rosenwasser (33), queer activist and political influencer, surprisingly won a seat in the National Council for the SP Zurich on Sunday. “Büsis, I have been chosen,” she wrote on Instagram to her 36,000 followers.

Rosenwasser did not expect that at all. Although there were even posters of her at Zurich’s main station, she never aimed to be elected. Your candidacy was only intended to generate votes for the SP.

But then everything turned out differently. From 20th place on the list, she achieved the eighth best result. She, who has never held political office before. Elected with 92,462 votes. She ran for office four years ago, at the time for the Juso, and received 8,000 votes.

Cold feet on Monday

The following Monday, it was unclear whether she would actually accept the election. She did not want to say yes definitively yet, she told the “Tages-Anzeiger”. First she must meet the current members of Zurich’s National SP Council and get advice on what such a mandate really entails. “Right now I feel like I’m getting stoned.”

On Tuesday evening she had decided: the political activist Rosenwasser would become a politician. She said in an interview with the online portal “Tsüri.ch” that she was very much looking forward to the position.

She belies the SVP

With her election, Rosenwasser has put the lie to the SVP Zurich, who has put the gender debate at the center of his election campaign with his ‘woke madness’ campaign. Zurich councilor Susanne Brunner (51) has launched a popular initiative that wants to ban the gender star in the city. Therese Schläpfer (64), federal councilor of Zurich, also fought against the asterisk. As a result, she was voted out on Sunday. And chose rose water.

She has been representing the concerns of the LGBTQ community for years and probably owes many votes to her efforts.

Queer organizations are happy

The Lesbian Organization Switzerland (LOS) is pleased with the election of Anna Rosenwasser. “Anna is – besides Tamara Funicello (33) – the second woman in the Swiss parliament who is openly queer,” she said when asked. She will bring important concerns to Parliament and represent the interests of the community in the best possible way. At Roze Kruis, the umbrella organization for gay and bisexual men, it sounds similar.

Yet the organization showed understanding for Rosenwasser’s hesitation. It is important and right that she carefully consider a final commitment. (oco)
