Drag queen lectures for children are banned in the canton of Geneva. The SVP Geneva demands this with an initiative. It stipulates that in the future, people under the age of 16 will no longer be allowed to participate in events where ‘men are dressed as women’. Both in public and private spaces, as the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” writes. The proposed law would also ban the canton from subsidizing such events.

Such ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ events, which have been taking place in several Swiss cities for some time, are a thorn in the side of the People’s Party. In the spring of this year, she publicly called for resistance to such events in Zurich.

Sexuality is not an issue at events

The aim of the lectures is to support children in forming their opinions. The boys and girls need to see and understand different gender identities and role models.

The newspaper goes on to say that the reason for the motion in Geneva were two events in the Genevan communities of Meyrin and Plan-les-Ouates last week. Accordingly, a drag queen well-known in Western Switzerland read children’s books to children aged six and over, accompanied by adults. The events were organized by local libraries and were open to the public. Sexuality was not a problem, as the mayor of Plan-les-Ouates confirmed.

Unlike in May in Zurich and other cities, there were no protests in Meyrin or Plan-les-Ouates beforehand. However, before the events, certain parents received a warning letter from the Schutzinitiative association, asking them to keep their child at home so that he or she could “grow into a normal person.”

SVP also takes action against such events in other cantons

The self-declared goal of the Schutzinitiative association is, among other things, to warn parents about age-inappropriate sex education. Four of the seven people on the board are SVP members of the national council.

Such events are also a concern for the SVP in other western Swiss cantons, as the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” writes. In Freiburg, for example, two SVP parliamentarians have submitted a request. And in Valais, an SVP politician, together with a representative of the FDP and the Center, filed a postulate against drag queen events. (oco)
