The coronavirus is on the rise again. The federal government therefore advises “particularly vulnerable people” to be vaccinated again.

Autumn has barely started and the coronavirus is back. About two weeks ago, the Federal Office for Public Health (BAG) and the Federal Commission for Vaccination Issues adjusted the vaccination recommendations. The federal government advises “particularly vulnerable people” such as retirees or people with a chronic illness to get vaccinated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is already warning about the spread of new corona variants. But so far, Mr. and Mrs. Schweizer’s willingness to vaccinate does not appear to be widespread. This is evident from a study commissioned by “20 Minutes” and Tamedia. Only a third of the population is willing to be vaccinated again.

Only half of retirees are ready

The research shows that there are major differences between the different age groups. Willingness to vaccinate among those over 65 is reportedly 53 percent. That would mean that only more than half of the age group for which the federal government recommends revaccination would actually consider a booster. This in turn could indicate concerns or information gaps in this population.

Of the younger age groups, for whom the BAG only recommends vaccination if they have other health problems, about a quarter (27 percent) want to be vaccinated. At 36 percent, men showed a slightly higher willingness to be vaccinated again than women, for whom this value was 29 percent.

GLP base is the most willing to vaccinate

According to the research, there are also differences depending on political attitude. While six in ten supporters of the Green Liberals would be vaccinated again, that would be only one in ten of SVP supporters.

FDP voters, on the other hand, would be in the middle at 39 percent. The values would be higher for centrist supporters at 44 percent and for SP voters at 55 percent. At 49 percent, the Green Party’s base is also showing greater willingness to get vaccinated.

According to the recommendations of the federal government, the ideal time for a new vaccination against Covid-19 should be between mid-October and mid-December. As the “Tages-Anzeiger” further writes, vaccination during this period could help maximize protection against the virus and minimize the risk of serious illness. (dba)
