Will federal councilor Guy Parmelin resign? The rumor mill in Parliament is buzzing.

After Federal Councilor Alain Berset (51) announced his resignation, SVP Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin (63) quickly made it clear: he was running for re-election in December, as he announced on X (formerly Twitter) in June: “ For the sake of clarity, I confirm that I would like to seek re-election to the Federal Council during the winter session of 2023.” And added: “I am very motivated!”

But now a rumor is circulating in Bern that Parmelin will announce his resignation on Friday – on the last day of the current term and before the elections. For health reasons, CH Media reports. Accordingly, the Vaudois is said to be suffering from back problems.

Chiesa has “no idea”

Whether it will actually come to this is also doubtful. “I have no indications that Guy Parmelin will resign,” says SVP boss Marco Chiesa (48).

His party also has no interest in it. He even considers the rumor as “a diversionary tactic to divert attention from issues such as the chaos in the asylum area, uncontrolled mass immigration, rising crime and the increasingly expensive and insecure energy supply.”

Parmelin will become president in 2026

The Ministry of Economic Affairs says that Parmelin is already preparing for his presidential year in 2026. Parmelin himself said last week on Radio RTS’s morning program ‘La Matinale’ that he wanted to run for re-election – and if he is elected that he would like to stay there for another four years.

However, such statements should always be viewed with caution. Federal councilors often keep their resignation secret until the last minute, as Berset’s example has once again shown. (Russian)
